During the 1920’s and 1930’s radical modernism Apostles and the Defenders of the Old World design traditions raged war against each other due to the tremendous controversy in design. From Hollywood sets to kitchen appliances, Art Deco became one of the most important visual signatures of those times. Art Deco left its mark not only on the luxuries of that day, but was also mass-produced for general public consumption. These streamlined designs came to permeate the marketplace, office, and home. Bonita follows both in design and color those rules that were set out during the days of the modern Apostles. Below are listed a few of the characteristics in specific areas of Art Deco which Bonita has incorporated into her own works of design and applications.

Colors Polychromatic effects in pale and subdues pastels or a combination of black and gold.

Walls, Ceilings, The designs used ranged from floral patterns to geometric shapes. Intricate plasterwork, woodwork, murals, glass, mirrors, glass blocks and textiles.

Walls Coverings Brilliant blue, vibrant magentas or vivid purples were both striking and toned down with the surrounding of dull silver.

Tile, Marble, and Mosaics: These were widely used for bathroom applications

Residents/Office: Art Deco was greatly used for the outward surfaces of many building systems. Some examples we have seen in the sculpted ventilation grills, water fountains, bathroom fixtures and the multitude of exquisite Art Deco elevator doors.

Fabrics & Carpets: The patterns most preferred for both fabrics and carpets ranged from floral to abstract geometric patterns. Between the two mediums, the carpets manufactured tended to be more abstract than the fabrics

Glass During the 1920’s & 1930’s a new decorative technique called "Ariel" was developed whereby the design was sandblasted into the glass to give surface decoration. During this time, glass was ideally suited because it was nonporous, transparent and easy to clean.
